Alyx Dennison is a singer, composer, songwriter and sound designer living and working on Wangal and Gadigal land (Sydney, Australia). Known for her genre-defying work across experimental pop, contemporary composition and performance art, her practice spans music, theatre, dance, contemporary art and film.
She first rose to prominence as one half of the acclaimed duo kyü (alongside Freya Berkhout), releasing two LPs to critical acclaim and being invited to perform at festivals such as SXSW (US), The Great Escape (UK), Sydney Festival, Meredith Music Festival, and Mona Foma. The duo received several accolades, including the Triple J Unearthed Award, Qantas Spirit of Youth Award, and a longlist nomination for the Australian Music Prize.
She has played as a regular touring member (voice, synths, percussion) for several bands including Parades (with Jon Boulet), Richard In Your Mind, Bonniesongs, Pheno and Laura Jean — and has been a live musical guest for acts such as Pleasure, Art vs Science, Rat vs Possum, and Paul Mac.
In 2013, she joined Nick Wales’ live music ensemble for Shaun Parker’s Am I as a lead vocalist (alongside Jessica O’Donoghue and Jess Green) and multi-instrumentalist (alongside Nick Wales, Jason Noble, Bree van Reyk and Tunji Beier) — performing a combination of classical, art and world music and furthering her study of extended and folk vocal techniques, including Armenian song. The production debuted at Sydney Festival and toured for several years across Australia, Europe, and Asia, leading to a slew of lifelong friendships and collaborative relationships in the rest of the cast, crew and ensemble.
In 2015, Alyx released her self-titled debut solo album (Popfrenzy/Caroline) to widespread acclaim — praised for its rich vocal layers, experimental textures, and striking melodic command — as well as her ability “to take pain to the loom and spin it to light” (music journalist Kate Hennessy). She has since toured and collaborated with Australian artists such as Sarah Blasko, Laura Jean, and Jack Colwell, and supported international acts including Juana Molina (ARG), Xiu Xiu (US), Lamb (UK), Tenniscoats (JPN), and Warpaint (US).
Alongside her solo work, Alyx has built a respected career as a composer and sound designer, creating original scores for Belvoir St Theatre, Griffin Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company, Sydney Dance Company, Karul Projects, Performing Lines and the Australasian Dance Collective — as well as a number of independent productions.
She has collaborated with many of Australia’s most celebrated creatives, including directors Eamon Flack (Artistic Director, Belvoir), Leticia Cáceres, and Hannah Goodwin; choreographers Charmene Yap, Cass Mortimer Eipper, Thomas E.S. Kelly, and Sara Black; and contemporary artists such as Agatha Gothe-Snape, Lauren Brincat, Patricia Piccinini and Oliver Beer (UK).
Her recent composition and sound design highlights include a revival of Tommy Murphy’s Holding The Man (dir. Eamon Flack, Belvoir), The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (dir. Hannah Goodwin, Belvoir), original music for SBS’s anthology series Erotic Stories, and scoring and performing in Lauren Brincat’s large-scale “living sculpture” Tutti Presto fff, performed by a flock of drummers on the steps of the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Sydney. She also collaborated with multidisciplinary artist ADHOC on the immersive sound and film work (i don’t dream, i float), commissioned by Sydney Theatre Company and Vivid Sydney.
As a singer, performer and collaborator, Alyx has worked with composers Nick Wales, Bree van Reyk, Jess Green, Steve Francis and Megan Alice Clune; and has sung alongside celebrated vocalists such as Joan La Barbara (Agatha Gothe-Snape’s Rehtorical Chorus), Jessica O’Donoghue (Shaun Parker’s Am I), and Sonya Holowell (Composition for Mouths (Songs My Mother Taught Me) by Oliver Beer), which has been exhibited internationally, including at the Opéra National de Paris.
In 2021, she released Keep a Day Free — a ten-minute choral work described as a “surreal, erotic requiem” — marking her first solo release since her debut and cementing her place as an enduring voice across genre and form.
She has also established a reputation for singular, one-off performances in strange, unexpected and beautiful venues — most recently performing at Sydney’s Hyde Park Barracks Hammock Room as part of the Sonic Spaces concert series.
Alyx recently previewed her highly anticipated sophomore album, Fine. Good. Great. Super., at Phoenix Central Park, alongside her beloved band: Marcus Whale, Jason Noble, and Bonnie Stewart (Bonniesongs). The album is set for release in 2026.
